About This Access Site
Toohey Lake is located approximately 11 miles northwest of Tofte in the Superior National Forest, offering a concrete log ramp and public boat access for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. The access is conveniently situated at the Toohey Lake Rustic Campground off Forest Service Road 170 (The Grade), which is easily reached via a well-maintained gravel road. Trailer parking is available at the launch, making it accessible for those with larger boats.

To reach the site from Tofte, take County Road 2 (Sawbill Trail) north for 15 miles, then turn left on FR 170 and continue for 5 miles to the lake. The campground offers seven rustic sites with a dock and facilities, providing options for overnight camping alongside day-use access. Note that there is no garbage service at the campground, so paddlers should plan accordingly. The lake also offers backcountry camping opportunities on the water; two first-come, first-served backcountry sites feature fire grates and latrines for overnight trips. Paddlers should treat or boil all water and follow Leave No Trace practices while on the lake.
