About This Access Site
Toston Dam Recreation Site provides public access to the Missouri River in southwestern Montana, located approximately 13 miles south of Townsend via Highway 287. The day-use facility features a boat ramp suitable for launching kayaks, canoes, and motorboats, along with parking, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms. There are no day-use fees. The site sits at 4,000 feet elevation and encompasses 5 acres along the river.

This section of the Missouri River is known as a productive trout fishery for rainbow and brown trout, with regular wildlife viewing opportunities including waterfowl, eagles, hawks, cormorants, and pelicans. The recreation area actually consists of two distinct sections: the Upper Toston Dam area above the dam (reservoir-style paddling) and the Lower Toston Dam area below the dam on the free-flowing river. Paddlers should plan accordingly depending on which section they intend to access, as conditions differ significantly between the impoundment and downstream reach.

For more information, contact the site at 406-533-7600.
