About This Access Site
Upper Goose Island in La Crosse offers convenient public access to Wigwam Slough and the Mississippi River via one of several boat ramps within Goose Island County Park. This site serves as an excellent launching point for exploring Pool 7-9 of the Upper Mississippi River, known for its scenic bluffs and relatively calm water conditions despite being part of the larger Mississippi River system. The area is part of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which spans 261 miles and provides outstanding opportunities for wildlife viewing and fishing.

The access area is well-developed for recreational boaters, with multiple ramps available throughout the park to suit different vessel types and water conditions. Paddlers can enjoy easy to moderate canoe trails ranging from 3-14 miles, with several takeout points along Wigwam Slough. The Upper Goose Island area is extremely popular with outdoorsmen and features the largest county campground in Wisconsin, making it ideal for extended paddling trips. From this access point, boaters can paddle south on Wigwam Slough or explore the surrounding pools, with options to access additional landings at Belvidere Slough, Halfmoon, and Goose Lake depending on your destination.
