The Waconda-Granite Creek access point provides boat launch facilities on Glen Elder Reservoir (Waconda Lake), a large impoundment on the Solomon River near Cawker City. This site serves as one of six boat ramps around the reservoir and can be a useful entry point for paddlers and motorboats, though water levels fluctuate seasonally. According to local conditions reports, the Boller Point ramp is noted as the most reliable option for smaller craft outside of Glen Elder State Park during low-water periods, so conditions at this site should be verified before your trip.
The Solomon River is a substantial waterway (Stream Order 7) with an average flow of 654 cubic feet per second and moderate gradient of 1.7 feet per mile, making it suitable for various boating activities. Glen Elder Reservoir offers excellent fishing for walleye, crappie, white bass, striped bass, and catfish. The lake remains open year-round and is known for productive spots at The Bluffs, The Dam, Granite Creek, and throughout the river channel. Wildlife viewing is excellent, particularly during winter when bald and golden eagles visit the area.
**Note:** Low water hazards may exist in portions of the lake west of the Granite Creek to Mill Creek line, so exercise caution and reduced speeds lake-wide. For facilities, camping, and additional amenities, Glen Elder State Park operates on the reservoir's north shore with a visitor center, marina, and multiple boat ramps.
