This public boat launch provides convenient access to the West Branch Mattawamkeag River and connects to the interconnected Mattawamkeag Lake system. Located just 1.2 miles north of Island Falls directly off U.S. Route 2, the ramp offers easy vehicle and trailer access for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. From this launch point, paddlers can access Fish Stream and explore the upper river watershed in Aroostook County's Appalachian region.
The ramp provides connection to both Upper Mattawamkeag Lake and Mattawamkeag Lake, which operate at the same water level, allowing for seamless boat travel between the two lakes via a short thoroughfare. This makes the Island Falls location an excellent base for exploring a larger water system rather than a single waterway. Paddlers should note that this is a working access point near Route 2, making it accessible year-round, though conditions vary seasonally. For current information on ramp conditions, facilities, and any potential restrictions, contact local Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife offices.
