About This Access Site
The West Front Street access site provides a boat ramp launch into the Kankakee River, a major waterway (9th order stream) flowing through Kankakee, Illinois. This section of the 132-mile river features a moderate average gradient of 1.4 ft/mile and steady flow of approximately 5,683 cubic feet per second, making it suitable for both kayaking and motorized boating. The ramp is conveniently located near Illinois Route 50 bridge in downtown Kankakee.

**Important considerations:** Paddlers should be aware of the Kankakee Dam located just west of the Warner Bridge (an arched rail bridge). There is a significant portage requirement to bypass the dam—approximately 3/4 mile along the cement wall on river right or left, which is described as challenging. Plan accordingly if traveling downstream. The Kankakee River offers excellent fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, and Northern pike, attracting anglers year-round.

For additional launch options in the area, the Kankakee River State Park offers alternative boat ramps at the Warner Bridge Day Use Area and Area 9 parking lot on the south side of the river, which may provide better access depending on your paddling plans.
