Description
Small and tight in places. Wide and cushy in others. One spot on this creek MUST be portaged. It is about 300 yards above the confluence of Green Cove and Whitetop Laurel. The creek goes through a really cool looking rapid.....minus the undercut on creek left that most all of the water is flowing under the rather LARGE diameter cable _(like three strands thick)_ stretched from bank to bank. There is plenty of time to get out above this one, so don't get laxed and drop into it. The rest of the creek is good fun creekin', lots of cool slot moves along with some other interesting rapids. There is one ledge that has a stiff hole at the base and is best ran on left center. DIRECTIONS: The take out for Green Cove is also where the put in for Whitetop Laurel Creek is located. From Damascus VA, continue toward Mt Rogers NRA on Route 58. You will drive approx 4-5 miles until you reach Route 728 - Creek Junction Rd. Turn right and follow this down to the access area. To save driving time and a lot of confusing backroad navigating it is best to park at the "Creek Junction" access area and walk up the AT/Virginia Creeper Trail to the put in. When you reach a gravel road crossing the creek, put in on the upstream side of the bridge. Be sure to check out all of the major rapids you can on the way in so they don't surprise you on the way down. Keep an eye out for wood and the fishermen, other than that enjoy!
