Description
Long Pond Stream is a tiny creek draining Long Pond into Rangeley Lake. It has a bit of flat water and a few (3?) steep slides. It is nowhere near as good as it neighbor, Smalls Falls, but can add a little variety to a trip to the Rangeley area. Put in below the bridge on Edelhied Rd and paddle the narrow stream through about one mile of meandering class I-II. If the river below the bridge looks fluid, you should be able to get through everything. More water will make the slides much better. The fun starts with a small class III drop, signalling the start of the slides which are each about 20 vertical feet, with a few potential bad spots in each. After a 100 yards of class III, the river flattens out. Takeout is at South Shore Road just before the river dumps into Rangeley Lake. This creek is narrow and has a tendency to fill with wood. It is rarely run, and has very few eddies, especially at higher flows. Big thanks to locals Chris Hull and Miles Puleo for discovering and sharing this fun Smalls Falls supplement.
