Big Shawnee Creek is located about two and one half miles south of Attica, near the popular
Big Pine Creek.
Winding through an intimate and very pretty "almost canyon" for much of the distance listed here, Shawnee features near constant action when up and holds a fair number of smaller play opportunities as well. Rapids are of the slabrock type common to this area with a few small rockbed drops in the lower part if the reach.
Care should be taken with fallen trees in and along the stream, notably at higher flows. (As of July '03, there was a tree down shortly after the put-in and another in the left channel passing the second small island.)
One could extend this run by another 2.2 miles by paddling all the way down to Shawnee's confluence with the Wabash, taking out at the Cty 200 bridge over the Wabash. Gradient averages 15'/mile for this lower portion.
