Description
Right up front, to be honest, I want to state that there is no real reason for any true whitewater boater to bother trying this reach! The main reason for having it on AW is to discourage any other 'explorers' from bothering to discover it, analyze it, fantasize about it, and wait for sufficient water to try it. Looking at the topo maps, it may appear there is adequate drainage and at least an area of gradient to merit some (mild) interest here. Indeed, if you drive across the creek at Old Mill Road (also labeled Konkel Mill Road, where the best of the gradient appears to be centered), looking upstream and down, you will see some rocky outcroppings, boulder-bed rapids and ledge-y drops. The thing is . . . that short stretch is virtually the only area (on the listed reach) which is in any way interesting. And, in order to make this stretch anything other than boney, you need the creek to be in flood. I mean, really high. The one run of this which I bothered to do, water was high enough to make passage impossible under the bridge at the listed put-in. Additionally, we encountered a handful of other bridges and hazards on the creek which were impassible at that flow. And yet, the area around Old (Konkel) Mill Road was boney! Just to make matters worse, folks in this area seem quite unfriendly to 'strangers'. The woods upstream and down from Old (Konkel) Mill Road is all posted against trespass. When we just stopped the car on the shoulder of the road, and got out to look upstream and down (still just standing on the shoulder of the road), we were shouted at by a resident from a nearby house who warned us to move on or they'd call the cops. So, once again, there is no good reason for any whitewater boater to bother trying this reach!
