Description
This is a short but interesting section of whitewater in downtown Waldoboro. Putting in at the river park cuts out a lot of flatwater, but also 2 small class I/IIs farther upstream. If undeterred by the flatwater and want to have a longer paddle, put in at Cross Street (44.120668, -69.408906) or at Wagner Bridge (44.144682, -69.415555). If putting in at the Medomak River Rest Park, you have several waves and holes that offer potential play before the horizon line just downstream. The river cascades over a chunky, nasty looking rapid that was formed by an old dam (which was torn down years ago, date pending research). There are large stone flakes, some pieces of rebar on the far left side, and strange refractory waves and holes with staggered drops. I have yet to see this rapid at flood stage, so I do not know what potential the middle line has, but for now, scout on the left, run the rapid on the right. You can hop out on walk to an island of sorts, or you can try to bushwack down on the river right bank to get visibility for the drop on the river right side (which is a somewhat blind drop into a slide). This is the line that I took, and was okay even in a slicy boat. Definite pin potential throughout this line, so be careful. After this, you have some little waves before coming to another rapid under the bridge. This has a lil' sticky hole in the bottom, which could be surfed if you're up for it (but there might be jagged rock and rebar). There is a small boof move at certain levels and eddy hopping is always fun. After this, there is one more class II/III (depending on level) before you arrive at the takeout. This river definitely needs some water to run. I would recommend the April/May timeframe, although I was lucky enough to catch it in July after some consistent heavy rains.
