Description
Rock Creek is a beautiful flashy mountain stream that falls steeply off the eastern flank of Mount Mitchell and gradually mellows from steep Class V to nice Class II-III. Hike the trail up river right until the trail fizzles out and put on, unless you want to bushwhack farther. Rock Creek gets harder and steeper the farther you hike. Expect pristine water quality and steep rapids tumbling through massive boulders and old growth forest in a remote nook of the Black Mountains.
Hurricane Helene radically changed Rock Creek in 2024. As of December 2025 there was a lot of trees in the river that were felled from the banks by the flooding. This is especially true in the upper steep reaches. Expect everything to have changed, every rock to have moved, and the hazards of a young river.
