Description
Putting in at the bridge over the SF, boaters start out in an intimate streambed, with class II water.  Things build to class III- in the vicinity of _'The Lost Mind'_ mine, and jump to class IV at _'Batter Up'_, a busy section along a slumping right wall with many pitcher plants. Downstream the river alternates between class III and IV depending on water level.  Keep an eye out for wood, but there were no portages in 2024. While the top half of the SF is busy boulder slaloms, the run transitions and slows with some bedrock walls and cleaner but easier rapids in the lower part.  The confluence with the NF of Lobster Creek is a special spot, followed by a short section of classic whitewater that is class III at low water. The ideal takeout would be at Lobster Creek Camp, but the park tends to host large groups and comes with a large access fee.  The road is gated during most of the boating season, so unless a relationship is created and a use agreement for boaters cultivated, paddlers must continue past the park and into a long section of class I-II boulder bar floating.  There are some nice campsite quality gravel bars and beaches along this section, so a lunch stop can be nice, and the potential to overnight the run down to the confluence with the Rogue is available. Eventually, the take out bridge is reached.  Boaters can end the run here, or continue down the Lobster. The shuttle is all on gravel roads, watch out for logging traffic.
