Description
This run isn't much on the whitewater, but the scenery makes it worth it. Some very nice cliff formations parallel the river on both banks making hard to remember there is civilization right there also. This run can be boat scouted with the exception of the low head dam you will notice on the way upstream. This drop creates a sticky hole but it can be ran on a tongue in the middle. One other drop a ways upstream from the put in is the only known ledges along this run so far. Some area creeks may offer a slight potential for some cl II-III boating. Getting There: After taking the right turn out of Pennington Gap follow the road upstream past Stone Face Market and observe the river. Just a ways upriver you come to the community of St Charles. Here make a right over the bridge where the river forks (you'll be following a fork) a short distance up the road is a pull out on the right. One can put in here. Take Out One can take out 6 miles into town at the athletic field or shorten the trip a bit by taking out just downstream of Stone Face Market and the lowhead dam. This makes for about 3 miles of river and scenery.
