Description
I have only run this once, so take all statements with a grain of salt. In 'New York Exposed', Dennis Squires states the first drop is tough and catches alot of wood. I assume Dennis ran this at a much higher level than we did. At 1080 cfs, the holes in the first drop were not bad, the run was very scratchy, and it was easy to avoid the wood on the bottom right by doing a right to left 'S' move. I would rate it class IV. I am sure higher levels, this is much different, so scouting before putting on is a good idea. Rapids after this are straight forward. There is one drop a ways into the run that may be worth scouting at higher levels. For the take out, you can paddle up Rice Brook as mentioned in 'New York Exposed', but note that this may be some work, since Rice Brook flows pretty well. We found it easier to go slightly downstream, then find a good spot to take out and just carry up to Route 458.
