Description
Smarts Brook put in is a 1.5 mile hike up a cross-county/mountain bike trail to the put in. Put in at the bridge over the river linking the Smarts Brook and Yellow Jacket trails. The first mile has several class IV ledge drops with easy class II-III water in between. When the river takes a sharp left and enters a shear wall gorge, take out and scout. The gorge is approximately 1/4 mile long with many steep constricted drops. Access is difficult because of the shear walls. Logs also are a problem often blocking the only route through. Take out at the Smarts Brook trail access parking lot or continue into the Mad river and takeout at the "Eddy" two miles downstream.
## Flow Information
There is no gauge on this river. Smarts Brook runs only during high water runoff in spring, usually late April or May. Watch out for ice in the shaded gorge. The correlation gauge is an estimate. If you run this section please leave a comment with more flow beta.
