Bobcat Gulch provides boat ramp access to the upper Salmon River near North Fork in Lemhi County. This is a major river system—the Salmon stretches 345 miles with an impressive 7,974-foot total elevation drop, creating dynamic conditions for paddlers. The river averages 13,100 cubic feet per second flow with a 23.1 ft/mile gradient, making this a substantial waterway suitable for experienced boaters. Recent improvements completed by the BLM have upgraded the highway approach and ramp conditions, and the site was plowed and maintained through spring conditions.
Bobcat Gulch is one of several access points along this section of the Salmon River, situated among other popular launches including Tower Rock and Morgan Bar recreation sites nearby. The area offers opportunities for river floats and day trips, with multiple access sites available for multi-day expeditions. For planning your trip, contact the BLM-Salmon Field Office at (208) 756-5400. Note that the ramp area experiences seasonal maintenance and occasional temporary closures for improvement projects; plan accordingly if visiting during late September through early October.
