About This Access Site
Colston Creek offers one of the best natural boat ramps on Idaho's Upper Salmon River, making it an excellent put-in for paddlers and boaters exploring this major waterway. Located about 14 miles north of Challis on Highway 93 near Ellis, this 8-acre BLM access site features a well-maintained natural ramp, shaded campsites, ample parking, and potable water. The site is popular year-round for fishing, camping, and river access. Note that recent improvements have been completed to highway approaches and ramp infrastructure.

The Upper Salmon River at this location is a major stream (comparable in classification to the Mississippi River) with significant flow averaging over 13,000 cubic feet per second and an average velocity of 5.2 feet per second. The river gradient in this section averages 23.1 feet per mile, indicating moderately fast water typical of a headwater mountain river. Paddlers should be prepared for swift current and rocky conditions characteristic of this drainage.

Nearby Cottonwood Recreation Site offers additional camping facilities with 13 campsites and two walk-in tent sites available for $10 per night (14-day limit), plus ADA-accessible amenities including restrooms and raised tent pads. The Kilpatrick Day Use Area provides another nearby river access option. For current conditions and details, contact the managing agency at 208-879-6200.
