Deer Gulch is a 55-acre Idaho Fish and Game Sportsmen's Access site on the Salmon River near Ellis in Lemhi County. The site offers camping facilities with spacious tent and RV sites, a covered pavilion, disabled angler's ramp, and multiple restroom facilities, making it a popular base for extended trips. The boat ramp provides access to the upper Salmon River, one of Idaho's major waterways with an average flow of over 13,000 cubic feet per second.
The Salmon River at this location is a large, fast-moving stream with an average gradient of 23.1 feet per mile and velocity of 5.2 feet per second, reflecting the challenging nature of paddling in this section. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for swift current and dynamic water conditions. Multiple other access points are available nearby, including Kilpatrick Day Use Area (with boat launch and restrooms) and other sites such as Elk Bend, Waddington Creek, and Shoup Bridge, providing options for shuttle trips or alternative launches. For specific questions about facilities, current conditions, or water flow, contact the BLM-Salmon Field Office at (208) 756-5400.
*Note: As of recent planning, Deer Gulch may experience temporary closures for maintenance and ramp improvements; contact the managing agency before your trip to confirm access.*
