Northside Beach - North provides public boat ramp access to the Black River in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This major river system flows northward with an average discharge of over 10,500 cubic feet per second, making it a significant waterway suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The Black River maintains a moderate gradient of approximately 1.5 feet per mile with an average current velocity of 2.8 feet per second, offering manageable conditions for paddlers with basic river experience.
The ramp is conveniently located near the confluences of Mississippi River Pools 6 and 7, providing access to the scenic Upper Mississippi River Valley corridor between Trempealeau, Wisconsin and Dresbach, Minnesota. This proximity allows paddlers to explore both the Black River and connect to the larger Mississippi River system. Plan accordingly for the river's substantial flow and current when launching, especially during high water periods. For the most current information on facilities, amenities, and any seasonal closures, consult the Wisconsin DNR boat access website at dnr.wi.gov/topic/Lands/boataccess/.
