Pine Island provides convenient access to the Wisconsin River near Portage in Columbia County. The ramp features ample parking with good pull-out areas that won't obstruct other launching boats. Access via Levee Road is mostly paved, with only the final tenth of a mile on gravel leading to the launch.
This is a popular section of the Wisconsin River for paddlers and boaters. From Pine Island, you'll find good sandbars for camping or breaks, making it an appealing stretch for canoe and kayak trips. The 6-mile paddle downstream to the Portage/Highway 33 access point is a moderate run, while continuing further to the Baraboo River/Thunderbird Road access (5.2 miles beyond) passes through a section known for particularly nice sandbars. The area is also near the Wisconsin River Islands and Fox River National Wildlife Refuge, offering additional exploration opportunities for nature-focused paddlers.
