The Riggins access site on the Lower Salmon River provides a launch point for paddlers and boaters exploring one of Idaho's premier river corridors. Located in central Idaho, this ramp serves as a take-off point for trips on the 63-mile section of the Lower Salmon between Vinegar Creek and Hammer Creek boat ramps. The Salmon River here is a major waterway (Stream Order 8) with an average flow of approximately 13,100 cubic feet per second and a moderate gradient of 23 feet per mile, offering dynamic whitewater conditions with notable rapids including Ruby and Lake Creek.
Be aware that water conditions significantly impact accessibility and difficulty. At high flows (30,000+ CFS), major rapids like Ruby present serious hazards with high potential for capsizing. Paddlers should check current water levels and consult the BLM Lower Salmon River guide before launching. Note that Spring Bar Campground is available within 10 miles for multi-day trips. If you're planning a full whitewater section descent, Lucile (new ramp) is the primary take-out point for the rapids downstream, making this an ideal put-in for intermediate to advanced paddlers seeking whitewater experience.
