About This Access Site
The Sand Wash boat ramp provides access to the Green River, a major tributary of the Colorado River in northeastern Utah. This remote, primitive boat launch serves as the starting point for floating the renowned Desolation and Gray Canyons, offering paddlers and boaters stunning scenery, interesting geology, and class I-III whitewater over an 84-mile journey.

The Sand Wash Ranger Station, which manages the boat ramp, offers limited amenities including overnight camping, day-use hiking, and rental cabins. However, visitors should be prepared for a rugged, remote experience, as there is no running water or trash removal at this location. Permits are required year-round to float Desolation Canyon.

To reach Sand Wash, travel approximately 40 miles southwest from Vernal, Utah to the town of Myton, then follow signs to the boat ramp. The concrete launch is 16 feet wide and suitable for boats up to 20 feet in length. Paddlers and boaters should be aware that mosquitoes can be abundant during the hot summer months in this remote desert environment.
