Torrey's Hole provides boat access to the Upper Salmon River in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area within Challis National Forest near Clayton, Idaho. This is a non-reservable public access point managed by the BLM-Salmon Field Office, which can provide additional information at (208) 756-5400.
The Salmon River at this location is a major river system with substantial flow averaging over 13,000 cubic feet per second and moderate-to-steep gradient averaging 23 feet per mile. Paddlers should be prepared for moderately fast water with a current velocity of roughly 5 feet per second. The river's elevation ranges dramatically across its 345-mile length, creating dynamic conditions typical of mountain river systems in central Idaho's Rocky Mountains.
The ramp is located near several campground options within 10 miles, including Upper O'Brien, Whiskey Flat, and Pole Flat campgrounds (some offering reservations), making it convenient for multi-day trips. The White Clouds Wilderness Area and other recreation opportunities are nearby. Users should practice quick turnaround times at the launch area to minimize congestion.
