The West Newton Public Boat Ramp provides convenient public access to the Youghiogheny River in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Located in the town of West Newton, this launch point is one of several publicly accessible sites along the Youghiogheny and serves as a popular put-in or take-out for kayakers, canoeists, and boaters exploring this scenic waterway. The ramp appears to offer straightforward access to the river without reported usage fees.
The Youghiogheny River in this section is characterized by a very gentle gradient—approximately 1 foot per mile as it flows toward the Monongahela River. This makes the West Newton area ideal for flatwater paddling and recreational boating. The river rarely runs too low to navigate, making it accessible throughout most of the year. From West Newton, paddlers can explore upstream toward Connellsville or downstream toward McKeesport, which offers an alternative take-out point with a surfaced ramp on the river-left side near Atlantic Avenue.
As you prepare to launch, remember to respect the local environment and other river users. Wash footwear and equipment before and after your visit to help protect the river's ecosystem.
