Canosia Road (Esko) to CR210 (Thomson Reservoir) (5.15 miles)

2003-10-26, Ryan Zimny contributed: The midway is a fun run in the spring that can be used as a warm-up for the more difficult creeks up the north shore, or as an introduction to creeking. I would classify it as class II-III, and even III-IV at extremely high flows. To check the flow, look at the river where it passes under Hwy. 61 in Esko. If the small island just downstream of the bridge is underwater, it's a good level. The putin is usually at the park a half-mile upstream on Canosia Rd, where parking is available. Paddle the moving flatwater/small waves until about 1/2 mile past where you pass under the interstate. _Flamingo Rapid_ is a class III sliding drop with a few holes to avoid at high water. Run middle/left. The other significant section is another 1/4 mile or so after you pass under another bridge. The river will noticeably pick up with some fun waves and lead directly into an island. Take the left channel and try to stay close to the island as the river drops over a sticky ledge drop. You may want to scout this section, and _Sucker Falls_ soon thereafter. Scout the falls river left. Usual line is middle-left down the tongue. After Sucker Falls, it's a short paddle to the reservoir. Take-out left of the dam at the dock (if it is in yet). It is common for the reservoir to be mostly frozen when the midway first opens up in the spring. Immediately below Sucker Falls is a 4-wheel drive road that connects to the main road. Hike left for about 3/4 mile if you don't want to try the hike over rotten ice.
