Steps is a technical Class III rapid characterized by a series of closely spaced boulder garden drops that require precise boat positioning and quick maneuvering. Paddlers must navigate a tight central channel with multiple potential routes, avoiding keeper holes and strategically placed rocks that can easily redirect or pin a boat. Careful scouting from river right is recommended, as the rapid's complexity increases with higher water levels and can quickly transition from manageable to consequential.
