Hard Tongue is a powerful Class IV rapid characterized by a narrow, technical entrance that requires precise boat positioning to avoid undercut rocks and a potentially dangerous hydraulic on the river's right side. Paddlers must navigate a series of steep, closely spaced drops with strong lateral waves that can easily flip an unprepared boat, making a clean line critical for safe passage through this challenging section of the Tygart Valley River.
