Description
A low-head dam creates a dangerous hydraulic recirculation zone that can trap and hold boats and swimmers, posing a severe drowning risk. Paddlers should avoid this structure entirely, as the uniform water flow creates a uniform, inescapable backwash that can prevent escape even for skilled boaters. Portaging around the dam is the only safe option when encountering this hazardous feature.
